The Newspaper

-Umar Farouk Adeiza

I neatly aligned my grief in
the pages of yesterday’s paper
appointing each headline its
appropriate slot in block style,

Silently following tragic
bygones entombed in my mind.
The earth is not some displaced universal
sport,
The moon is still 384,400 km away from my house,
In the fictitious kingdom, the polished wimp became the somber oppressor.

My trade is not with the confused
guardians of tragic histories,
Applicants of prove,
hangmen on necks of past sorrows.

Grief came adorned like
thoughtful reflections on a voyage.
Yes, i have searched the chambers
of the sun in hot dry days.

Yes, i brawled those
shapeless combat.
Still they remained incomplete,
Some nights i desired myself
the unknown.

The ruins are vocalised daily
at the burial of the wordsmith;
The returned spirit is cloaked in
the scent of freedom.
